Last week in class we watched a video called, "The F-Word Who Wants to be a Feminist?" It changed my perspective upon feminist but yet still to this day I know for a fact that I myself am not a feminist. I do believe that the rights and freedom women have today are amazing. I believe that we as women have everything we could ask for so why are there still feminist movements, what more could we ask for without over-powering men? I thought we wanted equality and equality we have. Some women may say we get paid less than men which is true in some cases but they don't put into perspective that when we as women take a mat-leave, the men in the workforce are getting raises because they are still working. I don't think some women put that into perspective. I truly believe that the women in Canada have things made and if anything a movement should be for the starving and homeless people that are out there. I don't see myself as a feminist because I think that women can do everything men can do, there's no one out there saying that women cannot be welders, carpenters etc. Women are allowed to do anything they put there mind toward(anything non-illegal that is).
This is a wordle I made from the lyrics of the song "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" by Shania Twain

Sexual Fantasy
I find it interesting and very creative of our minds to come up with sexual fantasies. Some people may have them while masturbating, sexual intercourse, and even in their dreams. A study shows that sexual fantasies are positively correlated to orgasmic potential. So why do most people find it vulgar to talk about? Most believe it's vulgar because talking about sex is seen as vulgar. Fantasies in my worlds are a kick start to a creative sexual relationship with ones partner if shared.
I find it very interesting that most women find it offencive, I myself do, when their boyfriend or husband have sexual fantasies with other women but yet we as women do it ourselves. So what drives us to hate it so much when our partners do it? That's something I cannot answer but can guess that it relates to the topic of jealousy and probably a portion of low self-confidence. The partner would never in real life go through with their fantasy unless the fantasy has there partner involved in it. That's something I tell myself when I think that my boyfriend has sexual fantasies with other women.
Fantasies are seen as an imaginary world. A place where your aloud to do anything without having to think you will go to jail, get divorced, dumped, etc. It's a way for humans to be creative with their sexual self. Study shows that 50% of women have sexual fantasies of having forced sex. When I first read this I thought it was crazy, why would a woman want forced sex. I did not believe it at first but then I told my friend about that and she said she does sometimes and that a friend of hers actually role played forced sex before. After hearing that I believed it and just realised that I am one of the few women that do not fantasize that.

Question on Abortion
The question asked in class and I'm sure is asked around the world is, "should abortion be legal? If so why and in what conditions?"
I'm personally against abortion but to a certain degree, so with that said I do believe that abortion should stay legal. The conditions that I accept abortion are when a women is raped and becomes pregnant from that experience and another reason would be if the woman's health is in danger then yes I do believe that abortion should be an option. I am extremely against abortion if the woman is just going out and not being safe about sex and gets abortions every time she is becomes pregnant then yes I do believe abortion is unacceptable at that point.
If the government made abortion illegal again I believe that some women will end up killing themselves and the baby. Some women even now a days try to do at home abortions such as as a funnel and bleach or purposely falling down the stairs. Abortion will occur if its legal or not, determined women will perform the task themselves

The Power of Vulnerability
Today we watched a video called, " Brene Brown: The Power of Vulnerability" and we later asked to reflect upon it. Many people today believe that being vulnerable is terrible due to the fact that they were raised not to be vulnerable. I do believe that being vulnerable can be consequential but after watching the video today I see another side to it. Being open to someone, vulnerable to your partner can actually be a great thing. We were asked to reflect on the video and relate it to our own experiences in life. I never realized this before but after meeting my boyfriend Kyle, I see that I actually accept myself for who I am. I no longer believe that I am unworthy of love or acceptance. I believe I have accepted myself due to the vulnerability I have towards Kyle. He makes me feel good about myself, I can trust him, I can show my true self around him without my make up on, and finally I can tell him everything and anything that is on my mind. In a way I guess you could say I found another side to vulnerability; a side that most parents do not put into perspective. I find that being vulnerable to someone you love and care for can be a stepping stone in your life to becoming yourself; accepting who you are.
Our second question we answered was relating the video to human sexuality. How encouraged is vulnerability in sexual relationships? I find that it's actually discouraged. Most people fear refection and therefore not vulnerable to their sexual partner. It was interesting to hear some people's points in class for example, women tend to have a more physical fear, stressing over whether or not the male will approve of their body and general looks when they are naked. Another point was that men tend to have a fear of "Will she approve of my performance in bed?" Men tend to stress over their performance not their physical appearance. I found the gender differences to be interesting but there so very true. My male friends always brag to each other and tell each other their techniques while my female friends and I talk more about how comfortable or uncomfortable it felt.

Homophobia Inquiry
Today in class it was mentioned that according to the textbook, research shows that men tend to be more homophobic than women and our question to this was why? Why are men more homophobic?
My answer/belief to this question is that men want to come across as masculine and they believe that if they approve of homosexuals that they will be seen as feminine or a homosexual themselves. When I was reading the textbook I found it interesting when I came across a research study that was done. They had two group of heterosexual males except one group was homophobic while the other was not. They placed a video of male on male action and recorded the sexual response. The heterosexual males who were not homophobic had no sexual response to the video but the heterosexual males who were homophobic had a small sexual response to the video. So with this said it also makes me wonder if most homophobic males are gay themselves or unsure of their sexual orientation.
Females on the other hand are more accepting to homosexuals than males are. I take an evolutionary prospective on this and say it's because women were always seen as the motherly, caring type of people who accept anyone. Most women believe that these values are still within them therefore they are more accepting to the concept of homosexuals. I also believe that women are more accepting of there sexual orientation then men are. Most lesbians are fine when coming out to people whereas gay males tend to have a harder time accepting the fact that they are indeed gay and therefore have trouble coming out to people. I believe society plays a strong role in those actions due to the fact that they tend to accept lesbians better than gay males, why that is? I'm not sure.

Sexual Orientation
We talked about several aspects of sexual orientation such as classification issues, kinsey's continuum, erotic dimensions but the one thing that stuck out for me in class today was Barry Adam's ideas. His idea, which I find true, is that relationships and attractions are more than just sex, they involve an emotional side to it as well as a strong connection between the two people. My teacher made a very good point in class regarding this idea. Heterosexual males like girls but do they like every girl they see?No they don't, they become attracted to an individual and gain a strong relationship with them (on most occasions). Same goes with homosexual males, yes they do like men but not all men. They to become attracted to an individual who they believe share the same interests and goals. So my question is why do all heterosexual males believe that all gay males are attracted to them? It stupid, it really is.

Why is it Hard For Homosexuals to Come Out?
The question many people have is, "Why is it so Hard For Homosexuals to Come Out?" With how society is today it should be easier for homosexuals to revel their truth about their sexuality but that's not the case. Most are afraid of being bullied, shut out from former friendships and even shut out by family members. I actually work with a guy who is homosexual and has only told a few people me not being one of them. I knew he was gay ever since high school but even mentioned anything about it. I get along great with him and see him as a good friend of mine now but yet I ask myself why won't he tell me he's gay? He knows I will not make fun of him or treat him differently just because he's gay. My co-workers who he has come out too even told him that I know but yet to this day he has yet to tell me face-to-face.
Today in class we watched a video on a homosexual male who was in the hockey league as an assistant, his name was Brendan Burke who sadly passed away in a car crash. He was one of the first people in hockey history to admit that he was gay. So many gay athletes are afraid to come out due to fear of being treated differently by teammates and even by the public themselves. It's stressful for them to keep their sexuality a secret but even more stressful to find a way of letting the world know. A man in the video made a very good point in that when a women comes out as being homosexual not many people care or are offended by it but when a male comes out it's a whole other story.
I believe that the reason why most males do not accept gay males is due to the fact that they believe that if a gay male is around them that they will try to hit on them or are attracted to them but that's not the case at all. Gay males and females do not go after heterosexual individuals and if they do it is an honest mistake on their part. I believe this in one of the main reasons why males in society do not tolerate other males who are homosexual.
People always say be yourself don't ever change who you are for others. So why is it when homosexual individuals come out that many people are offended and taken back by it? Homosexuals are people as well; people who have feelings and emotions and are capable of caring for others. People should not judge a person but their sexuality but rather by their personality and inner beauty. So many teen homosexuals commit suicide due to cyber and school bullying. Society needs to take a greater stand for this topic before it's too late.

De-Romancifing Relationships
Today was an interesting day in class we talked about relationships and taking the passion and excitement out of it and getting to know the process and communication behind a relationship. We first talked about the ABC and sometimes DE model. A standing for attraction in which two people begin by being attracted to one another. B stands for building in which the couple begins to build their relationship and intimacy level. C standing for continuation in which the two must decide where the relationship is going from there. Sadly sometimes people encounter D and E. D standing for Deterioration where one partner or both may decide that they do not want to be in the relationship anymore. Finally there's E which stands for Ending where the relationship is done.
Communication skills were discussed today and I would like to incorporate these ideas into the ABC(DE) model. I believe that if a relationship contained more communication skills maybe D and E would not occur. Talking about sex and intimacy can solve and prevent future problems. With this said, if more couples communicated more it would result in less problems. Less problems can create stronger relationships. I know in my own personal experience I had an ex who I never really communicated with about issues and you can guess where that relationship went. I believe that my current boyfriend and I have great communication skills. He makes me feel comfortable when I'm around him and therefore I can discuss issues I have within the relationship. I think our communication skills play a large role in why we have been together for so long. =)

Sternberg's Triangular Model of Love
Today in class we discussed a topic called Sternberg's Triangular Model of Love. I found the concept interesting and very factual in a way. Each corner of the triangle had titles one being Liking(intimacy), another Empty Love(commitment), and the last corner Infatuation(passion). Between each point there are three more types of love one is Romantic Love(passion & intimacy), another is Companionate Love(intimacy & commitment), and finally the last one is Fatuous Love(passion & commitment). To top of his whole structure with the middle of the triangle there is Consummate Love and in Sternberg's believes it is the most valued love; a love most people will want. It includes all components(passion, intimacy, and commitment).
The other day in class we watched a couple clips from Romeo & Juliet. With that said today we were asked which love do Romeo & Juliet have according to Sternberg's Triangular Model of Love. Personally I believe that their love would have been fatuous love. I believe this because the two obviously could not create a level of intimacy if they were forbidden to hang out with each other. On the other hand I do believe that they had a strong level of passion and commitment. Some people in my class disagreed with the commitment part but I do not understand why. The two lovers had to have commitment for each other if they both killed themselves for love. So with this said fatuous love which contains passion and commitment, is what the two lovers had (at least I think so).

Revolution of Attraction
I like to think that attraction in the 21st century is like a revolution from attraction in the past centuries. Way back when, I find that men saw women as a trophy; women cleaned, took care of the kids, looked nice, and obeyed their husbands. From this point I can see how Buss created the idea that men value attractiveness in women and that's all they value. Back then women were the homemakers therefore they needed a man who could provide for them so with that said Buss' ideas are correct for during that time period.
Now in the 21st century we can see that men value a woman that can provide for herself where she has a stable job and is educated. I noticed this when we did an in-class discussion on the topic and found that the males not only valued a women who was attractive but they valued a woman who has a stable job. I also find that in society today women appreciate a husband who is loyal and respects her. In the past I think women believe that they didn't deserve respect they just did whatever their husbands demanded them to do.
Attraction has changed over time, from clothing styles to how people treat their lovers; attraction has revolutionized.

Attraction
What makes a person attractive? This question was brought up in class to think about. In my own experience I find my boyfriend to be attractive because hes muscular, tanned, humorous, loyal, mature, has a stable job, gets along with my family, and I know that he loves me. I thought men and women had the same views on attractiveness but today I found out that it's not necessarily true. According to Buss, in long-term relationships women look for a provider while men look for sexual attractiveness.
Even thought I do believe most men value what their wives and girlfriends do for them but in another way I also believe that men can take women for granted. I don't mean to sound feminist but by watching some television shows, I find that men sometimes value the woman's physical looks rather that what they do around the house for the family.
This is a clip I found from According to Jim. I find it presents several examples of Jim taking Cheryl for granted, just as some men do to their wives and girlfriends.

Gender Challengers
I find it interesting that we even have gender ideals still in society. They say that many children look up to the celebrities and sometimes are even influenced by what they may do in movies and tv shows. There's so many gender challengers in the world that I don't understand why we even have gender ideals. Hollywood is full of gender challengers such as, Ellen, Angelina Jolie, Adam Lambert, Miss J and several more.
Pictures I found on google.
Children look up to celebrities and many grow up challenging their gender themselves. There's several girls out there that like to wear "guy" clothes, in fact I used to be one of those girls. I didn't care what I wore as long as I felt comfortable. With gender ideals in society those young girls grow up and are then seen as "tomboys"; they're not tomboys they are girls. Then society wonders why there's so much bullying occurring around the world. I believe that gender ideals plays a strong role in bullying. If a child challenges their gender they get picked on.

If society destroyed their views on how males should act and how females should act, I suspect there would be less teenage suicidals around the world. Ellen herself is a lesbian which makes this video even more inspiring, for someone who knows what young homosexual teenagers are feeling, to say it will get better.

Oedipal Phase
When I first learnt about the Oedipall phase or theory, I thought it was the most screwed up idea out there but then I came to realize what it was trying to get at. It's true that at a young age even thought most boys will spend time with their father, they deep down love the nourishment their mother gives them, therefore it will create tension between the son and father to get the mother's attention.
This is just a comical cartoon I found on google based on the oedipal phase.
One concept I found have to argue against in the phase would be when it states that girls at a young age get penis envy from their father mostly. I don't ever recall wanting a penis. I do recall wondering why females and males had a different down stairs but that was it. I always thought that if a young girl envied the penis that eventually they would become a transsexual and want to become a male as they got older. I find it crazy for a young girl to envy a penis. I do understand and agree with the concept that they are eventually happy with their vagina when they realize they get to have children later in life.
Even though there's theories all around us about gender typing, at the end of the day there's always the sayings of "mamma's boy" and "daddy's little girl."

Gender Roles
Today our topic in class was on gender and within that topic was gender roles, a complex group of ideas in which males and females are expected to behave. I found the following video on YouTube in which children were asked about gender roles.
I find it interesting that one of the little girls answers that girls have long hair when in reality there are several girls out there with short hair. I find it interesting due to the fact that children observe others in order to differentiate between males and females. It makes me wonder if media plays a role in their differentiating process.
Another point I noticed that was in a way disturbing to here was that the children said that the male doll is the one that goes to work. It makes me think of the olden days when woman had no working rights and were born to be a home maker. Which brings up another point about the children choosing the female doll to be the one that cleans and takes care of the children. It's sad to think that these kids believe in these ideas even though I'm sure their thoughts about gender roles will change over time. Even though I'm sure media plays a role in their schema process, I also believe that some children books bring about these ideas as they look at the pictures and read the story. All in all I hope these children come to realise that both genders share equal rights in society.

Our Children Under Influence
In class today we watched a disturbing film, "Sexy Inc.: Our Children Under Influence." It showed how society and media today has influence young children to believe that dressing sexy is the thing to do. The young girls believe its the only way they can be happy because in advertisements the women look happy. It's sad to think that children are missing out on their childhood.
The other day me and my friend went for a bike ride. It was starting to get dark so we began to bike home. On a hill side were a few young kids around the age of 12. I found insulting and disturbing when we passed and one yelled out, "I like your a**!" I think back to when I was that age and remember my parents telling me I had to be homer before the sun set. On top of this I don't recall me even thinking of provocative things, I use to write on sidewalks with chalk and rollarblade around town with my friends. Children these days are so manipulated by the media that it makes me sick to think what my kids will be like if society continues with its ways.
The video mentioned that young girls around the age of 14 are wearing spaghetti strap tank tops and thongs. When I was 14 I hated tank tops I always wore t-shirts and as for thongs I never thoughts I'd ever wear one, I never could understand the concept of a string going up your butt....
There was a girl in our class that mentioned how sad children are today and that her younger sister whose in grade 11 is embarrassed that she's the only virgin in that grade. This shocked me very much so in the fact that when I was in grade 11 the majority of people in my grade WERE virgins. There's a 16-year-old boy I work with and the stories he tells be about being with girls makes me sick. I try to tell him that some of his stories are not cool at all. He mentioned to me that when he broke up with his girlfriend that he had sexual intercourse with her best friend on a hill at a park. I had only one word to say to that and it was DESPICABLE!
My boss went to Vegas for 4 days and asked us all what we wanted her to bring back and the 16-year-old-boy said the cards that pimps hand out for prostitutes!
Kids of today make be not want to have kids at all! Society needs to change and it needs to change fast!

Kids of today make be not want to have kids at all! Society needs to change and it needs to change fast!

Which Thoery Would I Choose?
In class we learnt about 4 theorist:
1. Kaplan- therapeutic view consisting of 3 stages and based on sexual dysfunctions and what is wrong in a relationship.
2. Basson- a woman's approach and view on sexual response and how they see it.
3. Freud- based on the development stages upon young children. Believed that clitoral orgasm was immature and vaginal orgasm was mature. Children first experience pleasure through their mouths called the oral phase and later on in life through their genitals called the genital phase. Immature development occurs when an individual is stuck in the oral phase.
4. Master's and Johnson's- 4 step cycle and believe in only one kind of orgasm.
We were giving two questions:
1. Which of the four do you find most compelling?
I believe Master's and Johnson's 4 step cycle is most compelling. I believe this because there's makes the most sense to me due to my own experiences. The four phases(excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution) all occur except orgasm sometimes does not. Freud had no evidence with his work therefore I believe a lot of what he says is his own perspective. I find Basson's to be bias due to the fact that its from a woman's point of view; a man's view on sexual response could be different. Kaplan is too negative for me. I believe relationships should be based on happiness and intimacy not " let's pin point whats wrong in the relationship." Therefore I believe Master's and Johnson's is more realistic and compelling to me.
2. Which of the four do you find least compelling?
I find Freud's to be least compelling not only to the fact that he had no evidence, but also that he believes outrages things. Saying that a clitoral orgasm is immature makes a woman feel as if the only thing on her body that is mature is her vagina. I find it degrading towards women. Even though I do believe in his oral and genital phases, I don't understand why he yet again places an immature and mature status upon them. I also get the sense that Freud only believed in traditional orgasms and sex in which it is used for reproduction. I get this sense due to the fact that he doesn't believe clitoral orgasm is mature and that gay pleasure is unhealthy. For all these reasons, I believe Freud is a crazy man!

Master's and Johnson's 4 Phase Sexual Response Cycle
Today in class we went over a concept which I learned already in PSYC 260. I found it an interesting and easy concept to remember when I first learned it and still do. In PSYC 260 I learnt just the four phases but in class today I learnt what happens in each phase in both the male and female bodies.
Phase 1: Excitement- (males) An erection occurs and the testes increase in size and elevate up closer to the body. (females) Lubrication occurs, and erection of the clitoris happens, and breast size increases. Both sexes have an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Mytonia also occurs.
Phase 2: Plateau-(males)The Cowper's gland secretes drops of fluid, the testes get into position for ejaculation. (female) The uterus increases in size and elevates.
Phase 3: Orgasmic-(male) Contractions and ejaculation occurs and the sphincter relaxes. (female) 3-15 contractions occurs and tension is released. Both experience body spasms.
Phase 4: Resolution-(male) the first bit of blood with-draws within the 1st minute and the rest after. (female) Released blood from the genital and breasts. Mytonia is released for both sexes.
In PYSC 260 we saw the 4 phases as a diving board. Climbing up the latter is the excitement, walking across the board to the end is the plateau, jumping off is the orgasm, and floating in the water is the resolution. I find that concept is an easy way of remembering the 4 phases.
This is a picture we received in PYSC 260 to remember the 4 phases

Private Dicks: Men Exposed
Today we watched a surprising film called Private Dicks: Men Exposed. It was shocking at first to see naked men all over the screen but after awhile I stopped noticing that they were even naked. I noticed most people found it surprising to see naked men in a film. I think the reason for this is that in most Hollywood movies the men are never naked, they may be shirtless but never naked. It's usually the women who are exposed in Hollywood films.
Comparing Private Dicks to the Vagina Monologues
I found that the vagina monologues were more theatrical than the private dicks film. The male film was more real; it had real men naked in front of a camera. There were no parts or scripts in the private dick film. The men told their experiences and what they thought about their dick and how society revolves around the size of it.
A girl in my discussion group made a very good point in that males may shower together but they will not look at each other whereas when females change together they see each other as just another woman; their not afraid to look at one another. I believe this is due to the fact that the males are afraid they will be seen as "gay" if they did look at another naked man. Same goes with strip clubs. You will always see males and females at the females strip clubs but if you ever go to a male strip club, the majority will be females. It's very rare to find a male at the male strip clubs. Both sexes compare their bodies. Men compare the penises to others while women compare their breasts to others. It's a natural born concept to do so. Why we do it is another question that I cannot answer.

Vagina Monologues
The other day in class we watched a vagina monologue on the period. The video shocked me because the period isn't an everyday topic. Most woman will complain to each other when the time comes but that's about it; it's not an everyday conversation, especially between sexes. I never heard of vagina monologues until the other day so I decided to look up a few and listen to them. I recently found this one on YouTube.
The woman in this video makes a good point. Shaving the vagina is a pain in the bum but most woman do it. For some odd reason I thought of it as normal until I watched this video. So why do woman shave anyways? Most will say they don't like hair but yet we wouldn't shave our hair on our head constantly. She made good point in the fact that most men like it shaved but yet most women like the males to be shaved as well. I believe that if you don't mind shaving than why stop? It doesn't mean you don't respect your vagina it just means that you like it tidy.

Kinsey
Today in class we learned a bit about an extravagant man named Alfred Kinsey. He was born in 1894 and became one of the first to actually research human sexuality. There's a recent movie called "Kinsey" which we also watched in class. The movie informed me on how Kinsey thought about sexual normalcy. I believe Kinsey, according to the movie, did not have a definition for sexual normalcy, instead I believe that he considered every sexual action to be normal; there was no abnormal or not normal sexual activity. Kinsey in a way broke the normal wall that most people during the Victorian time had towards human sexuality. He destroyed all the rumors and took a risk in his life by publishing a book on human sexuality.
This is a movie clip from the 2004 film "Kinsey"
Watching the clip makes you realise how society can control one's thoughts and behaviours. Society can kill a human being with its over powering regulations and beliefs. Kinsey risked his career as a professor as well as his identity to create a book that changed the lives of many citizens during that time and present. He broke through the "unspoken" barrier society had placed upon human sexuality at that time. After watching the film I believe and see Kinsey more than a professor and researcher, I see him as a hero; someone that changed the lives of many people and may have even saved them.

The Scientific Method
The other day in class we learnt about the scientific method of research and the 4 steps within it.
1. Create a research question.
2. Create an hypothesis.
3. Test it
4. Draw a conclusion
So in class we did an activity for this but instead of testing our question we explained how it would be tested and instead of creating a conclusion we anticipated what the results would be.
1. My question was, "Does alcohol increase the chance of a couple getting into an argument?"
2. To test my question I would randomly select couples walking down the hallway of a university which I know would not create a very accurate result but I believe that the university couples are the ones that tend to go out and drink at bars or parties and many of them will go with their partner in hand. So with this said I would then send 2 or 3 couples to the bar and have a spectator watch them. With my control group which would be the couples who are not sent to the bar, would be sent to a park or an amusement park and spend a few hours there together. I would then compare my control groups behaviour to the ones that were sent to the bar.
3. In the end I believe that the control group would have loving behaviour between them whereas I don't believe that the couples sent to the bar would all get into an argument but I do believe that at least 1 out of the 3 couples would get into an argument.
4. I would then anticipate finding results that alcohol MAY increase the chance of a couple getting into an argument.
This is a picture I found on google which I believe resembles that sometimes alcohol can get in the way of a relationship.

Habermas' Paradigms
Going into Fam322 I did not expected to learn about human sexuality through a world view and how it fits into society.I believed we would learn the more physical and psychological side of it. But with that said I did learned a very important concept on the first couple of days called "paradigms" which in a way is a world view or a global perspective on concepts. Habermas had three paradigms, empirical- analytic, critical theoretic, and situational interpretive. I live through situational interpretive, where I define a concept by using my own experiences for example, falling in love. I'm not a romantic at all and actually hate getting flowers and having candle light dinners so in my prospective I believe falling in love is finding a best friend, a companion, and someone you think about 24/7. I also see it as a piece of me, without my boyfriend I would feel as if I lost a part of my identity. Some concepts such as love, should be only viewed through situational interpretation not through the empirical-analytic paradigm which is the scientific view point. I stand behind my decision because humans has their own personality, their own identity, therefore shouldn't their thoughts on concepts differ as well? Not all perspectives on love is like mine. There are several views in the world on love, therefore love should not be given a definition. In conclusion concepts like love should not have a definition and placed within textbooks, they should be seen differently through all eyes.
